I sewed my first, and only, skirt when I was a junior in high school. It was a simple A-line pattern that my mom helped me with. I loved it. I never really liked skirts, but I loved this one.
See, my mom was a great seamstress. She had made my costumes until I was old enough to think that the store-bought costumes were better. {Silly little girl, I was.} That's not the point, though. The point is that my mom enjoyed sewing. She was pretty great at it, but she let it go by the wayside...until I wanted to make a skirt in high school. Then, neither she nor I ever stitched again. I won't get that opportunity again, either. My talented and amazing mom currently resides behind the Pearly Gates, hanging out with the likes of Mother Theresa, Princess Diana, perhaps John Wayne, and the most talented and humble-hearted comedian great, the late Robin Williams (Lucky lady! I'm sure she's up to her eyeballs in gut-wrenching laughter).
I'm not looking for sympathy. I just wanted to let you get a taste of what inspired me to start sewing. A reason to go buy my first sewing machine. The truth to why I wanted to find something that would connect me to her and make me feel like she was near me every time I made a stitch. Whenever I make something, I can't help but think about how cool it would be to have taken the time to grow this passion with her. I never took lessons. I didn't youtube how-to's. I just did what felt good. Sew.
Ironically, I didn't begin sewing until last year. I wanted to make my son his Halloween costume. You know, the same way my mom used to make mine. So, with the idea of a cowboy in mind, I found a pattern idea for chaps and a vest. Yup. I said chaps.

Needless to say, he got rave reviews. :)
This little ditty opened the floodgates. I have found a passion for this hobby that is unlike anything else I've experienced. I love trying new things and creating. To date, I have made many quilts, bags, aprons, pouches, tops, pants, and just started getting into embroidery. I can't help but think that my mom is guiding my hand and my heart. Stitch by stitch. That, is pretty freakin' awesome.
Keep sweating and sewing.
